RUNNING SPEED

9 metres / second

On average, the running speed of dogs is 32km/h (20mph).

But there are big differences between breeds: in just 3 seconds, the greyhound, the fastest breed of all, can reach a speed of 60km/h (37mph) and even up to 90km/h (56mph)!

NASAL CAVITIES

30 times larger than man's

Dogs have an extremely sensitive sense of smell. They are constantly sniffing their surroundings with an olfactory efficiency 10,000 to 20,000 times greater than a human. They can detect a specific smell, even the minutest, among many others, a capacity which is essential for them to locate their prey and hunt it down.

FREQUENCY RANGE

40 to 60 kHz

Dogs can hear sounds up to 4 times further away than humans. They also hear ultrasounds inaudible to man. Like cats, they can dissociate sounds and have a strong dislike for those which are too loud and strident.

VISUAL FIELD

250 degrees

Humans have a 110 degree field of vision, while dogs have an extended peripheral vision of 250 degrees! Although dogs distinguish less detail than we do, they are much better at detecting the least sign of movement. They also have good night vision thanks to a light-reflecting surface just behind the retina, which also makes their eyes glow in the dark.
